Liver Histopathology

The Liver Histopathology laboratory provides dedicated integrated specialist diagnostic support to the Institute of Liver Studies clinical and surgical service and to the King’s College Hospital Paediatric Liver and Paediatric Gastroenterology service. The Laboratory provides specialist opinion to other hospitals treating adult and paediatric liver diseases both nationally and internationally.

The specialist diagnostic histopathology areas covered by the service include adult hepatology, paediatric hepatology and paediatric gastroenterology, hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgical pathology and cytology, and liver and intestinal transplantation services.

The services provided include interpretation of biopsy, surgical and hepato-biliary-pancreatic cytology specimens, urgent (same day) biopsy processing and interpretation, a frozen section service for the hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgical service, a 24/7 on-call frozen section service for transplant donor assessment and a dedicated (same day) immunohistochemistry facility. The Consultant Histopathologists support Cancer Multidisciplinary team meetings and hold histology meetings for adult and paediatric liver patients and paediatric gastroenterology patients. There is also an active postgraduate hepato-biliary and pancreatic pathology teaching programme, and an extensive research programme encompassing aspects of adult and paediatric liver disease including transplantation, immunology, cancer, metabolic and inhertited cholestatic disorders.

The histopathology senior medical staff consists of four Consultants in Histopathology supported by a dedicated team of five biomedical scientists, a medical laboratory assistant and a medical secretary.

The Liver Histopathology service has a throughput of approx. 4500 number of accessions per year, which includes:

  • approx. 200 specimens for urgent same day processing
  • approx. 750 frozen sections for intra-operative frozen section or donor organ assessment

09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays
Specimen reception with consultation and results supply are generally unavailable outside those hours. Specimen drop-off is available at any time. A Consultant on-call rota exists; in emergencies or other unusual situations, a Consultant can be reached by telephone at any time either through their mobiles or +44 (0)20 3299 9000 (King’s College Hospital switchboard) or via the Liver Transplant co-ordinator (contact details) if it is a transplant related enquiry.

URGENT PROCESSING
A same day urgent biopsy processing and interpretation service is available for limited numbers of specimens (generally biopsy material). It must be approved for any particular specimen by both a Consultant who clinically attends the patient and a Consultant Histopathologist. An approved specimen must reach the laboratory by 13:30 to qualify for “Urgent Processing”.
FROZEN SECTIONS
To discuss specimen requirements and to ensure availability of staff, requests should be arranged in advance by contacting the Liver Histopathology Service +44 (0)20 3299 2237 for hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgical specimens and for transplant donor assessment by contacting the duty Transplant Co-ordinator (Air call). For assessment of donor organs, this service is available outside normal working hours through the Transplant Co-ordinator.
